Calming Techniques

  • 1. Swaddling

    • Snug swaddling is the cornerstone of calming and is the essential first step in soothing your baby. Wrapping imitates the continuous touch and snug cuddling of the womb.

  • 2. Side/Stomach

    • The back is the only safe position for sleeping, but it is the worst position for calming fussiness. Rolling your baby to the stomach or side can stimulate a womb-like sensation in the inner ear.

  • 3. Shushing

    • Strong, harsh shushing is music to your baby’s ears. It mimics the whooshing he heard from the blood rushing through the placenta and uterus. The best way to imitate these sounds is through white noise.

  • 4. Swinging

    • Womb-like motion is one of the top baby-calming tips used by parents. These motions range from slow rocking to fast, tiny motions.

  • 5. Sucking

    • Pacifier sucking triggers the calming reflex. Breast- or bottle-feeding also triggers the calming reflex.
